The Elephant & Castle,
Emily & Hazel Askew are a dazzling & popular young duo, using fiddle, melodeon & concertina to breathtaking effect. From dark ballads to thrilling dance tunes, they play & sing with driving energy. They also play recorders, harp, vielle, bagpipes & shawm. Emily's Early Music connections include The Dufay Collective, Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Shakespeare's Globe & Apollo West End.
The workshop will focus on a dynamic range of mediaeval & Renaissance music that is often not so far from folk music. The focus will be on instrumental music, but there will also be opportunities to sing for those who wish. We will learn ancient melodies & learn how to bring them to life, covering ornamentation, harmony & pronunciation. We will demonstrate our early instruments & delve into their histories.
