Bob Lewis is a genuine Sussex traditional singer with a style & repertoire of his own. For many years he was part of group of Sussex traditional singers who met monthly, including the Copper Family, George Belton, George Spicer, Cyril Phillips, Bob Blake & Gordon & Mabs Hall.

Bob will bring rare recordings of old singers as a starting point for discussion. We'll look at how perceptions of traditional song have changed, how styles & sources have changed as well, & how we can weave our own experience of life into the songs we choose to sing. We'll look at the various new trends in reinventing old songs & ways of keeping the repertoire fresh & entertaining. Bring at least one song that you care about to sing & discuss.

IN THE EVENING BOB LEWIS PERFORMS AT LEWES SATURDAY FOLK CLUB
AT THE ELEPHANT & CASTLE

(admission £7; advance tickets available from address at end of the booking form)

Bob will bring some recordings of old singers & songs going back to the time of the Boer War; then we'll discuss how ideas of what traditional singing sounds like, where the songs come from, & what they are about have changed hugely as time goes by.
There are many styles of singing. How can we make our own lives & feelings part of our singing? Bring a song that's important to you & discuss why.
How are traditional songs being reinvented? Which ways of doing this succeed?
How can new songs be written or constructed?
