MAY 18 EMMANUEL PARISELLE & RICHARD BURGESS £10
Emmanuel is one of the best melodeon players in France, singer, songwriter & expert on French regional dance music. Richard sings with guitar & English concertina. They draw on a mixture of French, Scandinavian & English traditions with great enthusiasm for sea songs.

MAY 18 EMMANUEL PARISELLE & RICHARD BURGESS: FRENCH & SCANDINAVIAN DANCE MUSIC (any instrument)

Emmanuel is one of the best melodeon players in France, a singer & an expert in French regional dance music. He also plays a specially-designed 'Franglo' concertina. He has taught at Hands-On Music & regularly leads melodeon-building weeks for EATMT in Suffolk.
Richard, originally from Kent, sings & plays guitar & English concertina. He has spent all his adult life in Norway & is a key figure in the country's folk music scene, drawing on Scandinavian & English traditions.
The workshop will focus on learning tunes, chiefly from South-Western France & some from the Norwegian-Swedish border, placing them in their cultural contexts & looking especially at different strategies for chordal & rhythmic accompaniment.
Some music will be sent out in advance.

Jerry has a fine voice & compelling way with traditional songs, especially ballads. He also writes his own in traditional style. Jerry has recently recorded a CD, ‘The Leaves of Life’ & is working on another.

One of England's finest singer-songwriters, making powerful, moving & often humorous songs using the traditional styles of his North-East home about working people, especially minters, shipbuilders & deep-sea fishermen. Jez plays guitar, harmonica & cittern.

JUN 8 JEZ LOWE: SONGWRITING IN TRADITIONAL STYLE

Jez's songs such as Back in Durham Gaol, Old Bones, The Bonny Barque the Bergen, These Coal Town Days & High Part of the Town have been recorded by Fairport Convention, the Tannahill Weavers, the Unthanks & the Young'uns.
He currently works with his band The Bad Pennies, with Bob Fox, Billy Mitchell & Benny Graham in The Pitmen Poets, and contributed to the new BBC Radio Ballads series.
The workshop will cover an approach to writing 'modern' songs using the techniques & sensibilities often found in traditional folk songs & narrative ballads, both lyrically & musically. People who don't read music or play an instrument are welcome.

Charlie has a beautiful, expressive voice & wide repertoire of traditional songs in English, with a few in Scots Gaelic. Originally from Framfield, he now lives in Inverness & swings a mean scythe.
Many people will remember him from Sussex All-Day Singarounds & Lewes Folk Festival.

Sandra Kerr has long been a brilliant & influential singer & player of the English concertina, since with her days with Ewan MacColl's Critics Group.
A versatile musician with a fine, expressive voice, she is also an accomplished songwriter & has been a core tutor on the Newcastle University Traditional Music degree course.
Sandra has recorded with many fine performers including her daughter Nancy Kerr & James Fagan. She also co-wrote the music for the children's TV series Bagpuss.

The workshop is for any concertina system. It will focus on creative accompaniment for the voice & also a short session on the tunes Sandra recorded with Vic Gammon on the highly entertaining CD Early Scottish Ragtime.
